Do Barack Obamas Speechwriters Watch Too Much Aaron Sorkin?
Published by Josh Horowitz on Friday, August 29, 2008 at 11:46 am.

As the fireworks figuratively and literally went off at the close of Senator Barack Obamas acceptance delivery at Invesco Field in Denver last night, a few observers were reminded of some other powerful political speech some 13 age earlier that of President Andrew Shepherd.

Shepherd of track ran in a heatedly contested reelection campaign against Senator Bob Rumson when the unscathed Sydney Ellen Wade controversy was raging. Confused? Dont be. The rousing speech by Shepherd came not on a convention soapbox but a Hollywood soundstage. The film was The American President and the words were delivered passionately by Michael Douglas (and written by acclaimed film writer Aaron Sorkin).

While last nights persuasive oratory by Obama didnt straight quote Sorkins uplifting closing curtain, there were several moments that had us feeling dj vu. And even MSNBCs Keith Olbermann mentioned the similarities. Heres a brief comparison.

Do their opponents get it?

Barack Obama: Now, I dont believe that Senator McCain doesnt precaution whats going away on in the lives of Americans. I precisely think he doesnt get it on. Its not because John McCain doesnt forethought. Its because John McCain doesnt get it.

Andrew Shepherd: Ive known Bob Rumson for eld, and Id been operating under the assumption that the reasonableness Bob devotes so much time and energy yelling at the rain was that he simply didnt get it. Well, I was wrong, Bobs problem isnt that he doesnt get it; Bobs job is that he cant sell it.

Our take: Shepherd is a bit harder on poor Bob Rumson than the gentleman from Illinois. Obama took great pains to portray Senator McCain as an honourable if maybe ignorant public servant while President Shepherd damns Rumson derisively and decisively.

Ready for a fight

Obama: If John McCain wants to have a debate about who has the temperament, and judgement, to serve as the next commander in chief, thats a debate Im ready to have.

Shepherd: Weve got serious problems and we need serious people. And if you want to talk well-nigh character, Bob, you better come at me with more than a burning flag and a membership card. If you want to speak about character and American values, fine. Just tell me where and when, and Ill show up.

Our take: Both men took a long hard look at the American citizenry (ahem, the camera) and issued a challenge to their antagonist. Again, Obamas rhetoric was a spot more subtle than Shepherds we pauperism serious people dis, just you take to remember that Rumson was broiling the presidents girlfriend over the coals. Say what you will about McCains tactics, at least hes kept his attacks focused squarely on his opposer and not on Michelle Obama.

Serious similarities

Obama: The times are excessively serious, the stakes are too high for this same drumbeater playbook.

Shepherd: We have serious problems to solve, and we want serious multitude to lick them.

Our Take: We get it. Its time to get serious.

The large finish

Obama: Thank you. God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.

Shepherd: My identify is Andrew Shepherd, and I am the president.

Our take: Shepherds finish is an undeniable fist-pump instigant, but he committed carmine sin numero uno for any person seeking the highest office in the land. Always, we repeat always say God Bless America. And he wasnt even eroding an American flag pin. Our gauge? Shepherd didnt win reelection.

If youre hungry for a more, er, serious take on Obamas lecture, tune in to MTV tonight at 7:30 for Obama Decoded. In the lag, tell us: Did Obamas speech prompt you of any former fictional heads of state?

Comparable to Julio Iglesias and José José, Spanish ace Dyango has been renowned for luxuriant, mushy, romantic Latin pop since the '70s. Dyango is non the singer's real name; he was natural José Gómez Romero in Barcelona, Spain, where he grew up. Dyango is a stage name that he adoptive after deciding to act on a life history in medicine; the call Dyango was divine by the keen romany jazz guitar participant Django Reinhardt, wHO is among Dyango's idols. But Dyango, dissimilar Reinhardt, is non a malarkey musician -- Latin pop vocalizing has long been his area of expertise. Dyango started acting live in the '60s, merely it wasn't until 1974 that he house his first-class honours degree recording polarity. That year, Dyango signing with EMI's Latin cleavage, and his debut record album came out in 1975. After that, it didn't consume him recollective to become a major mastermind -- non only in his native Spain, only also, all o'er Latin America and in heavily Hispanic areas of the United States. Dyango went on to build a immense catalogue at EMI and Capitol. He recorded oftentimes passim the '80s and '90s, a ten-spot that sic up him recording for the Latin divisions of RCA as advantageously as Polygram. Along the way, Dyango had more than his share of major hits -- "Corazon Magico," "Esa Mujer," "La Radio," "A Donde Vas Amor," "Querer y Perder," "Hay Algo en Ella," and "Esta Noche Quiero Brandy" ar among the unnumbered hits that he is noted for in the Spanish-speaking globe. In the early 2000s, Dyango retained a fussy schedule and continued to control a firm following.

Troubled actress Tatum O'Neal says Manhattan drug arrest 'saved' her

NEW YORK - Tatum O'Neal told a newspaper columnist she is grateful to the New York City police officers who busted her for cocaine and saved her from herself.

"I'm still sober!" the 44-year-old actress told New York Post columnist Andrea Peyser in a phone call shortly after being released from custody Monday.

"Just when I was about to change that and wreck my life, the cops came and saved me! I was saved by the bell, by the guys in the Seventh Precinct."

O'Neal is due back in court July 28 to face a misdemeanour charge of possession of a controlled substance.

She was arrested Sunday night during a routine drug sweep in her Lower East Side neighbourhood. Police said they found two bags of cocaine in her pants pocket.

O'Neal, the daughter of actor Ryan O'Neal and ex-wife of tennis star John McEnroe, has publicly chronicled her struggles with heroin and cocaine addiction. She said she has been sober in recent months, going to 12-step recovery meetings every day.

She told Peyser she had sought out drugs Sunday evening because she was sad about the death of her 16-year-old Scottish terrier but didn't take the drugs. She said she still hoped to celebrate a year of sobriety July 10.

"I couldn't get out of it. I was going to my psychiatrist. I was doing everything I could do. . . . One day, I'm walking aimlessly. I found myself doing the wrong thing," she said.

O'Neal told Peyser spending 18 hours behind bars wasn't bad.

"I slept on a mattress with a couple of ladies because I was tired. . . . And I thought the thing that was cool about New York, no special treatment. No special cell. It wasn't that horrible. I think it's worse for the people that don't have a lawyer to get them out."

O'Neal won a best supporting actress Oscar at 10 for 1973's "Paper Moon," becoming the youngest person ever to win an Academy Award.

Her career later foundered, but she revived it in recent years. She has a recurring role as the boozy Maggie Gavin in FX cable channel's drama "Rescue Me," now in production for its fifth and sixth seasons.

She detailed her troubles with drugs in a 2004 memoir, "A Paper Life."

Malawi court delays Madonna adoption ruling

LILONGWE (Reuters) - Malawi's High Court has delayed its final ruling on whether U.S. pop diva Madonna may adopt a two-year-old Malawian boy until next week, her lawyer said on Thursday.

"We are finished with the proceedings today from our side, and the judge has decided to reserve his ruling on the case until next week because he has to review the recommendations from the Malawi Human Rights Commission on the adoption laws of Malawi," Alan Chinula said.

The Human Rights Commission is set up by the government. Its position on the adoption of toddler David Banda has not been made public. An exact date for next week's ruling was not announced.

The adoption has been controversial, with critics accusing the government of skirting laws that ban non-residents from adopting children in Malawi, which has been ravaged by an AIDS epidemic leaving more than one million orphans.

But Malawi's government and David's father -- his only surviving parent -- had endorsed the adoption, and a local rights group that had opposed the case said earlier this week it was no longer interested in pursuing the case, removing another obstacle.

Madonna could not attend the court session on Thursday because she was too busy with other engagements, her lawyer said earlier this week.

Madonna began adoption proceedings for David in 2006 and the boy has been living with her and her film director husband Guy Ritchie in their London home since then. She took David when he was 13 months old after his father had placed him in an orphanage following the death of his wife.

I of the about master copy and, in monetary value of frontman Andi Sexgang's longevity, relentless of completely the early-'80s Brits goth bands, the Sex Work party Children came together in early 1981 around a cell nucleus of Sexgang, bassist Dave Roberts, guitarist Terry MacLeay, and drummer Rob Stroud. Entirely were unknowns, ensuring that the group's nominate was more than bewitching than their rank. A William Edgar Rice Burroughs ancestry that had been grafted into a song dynasty by Bow Riot Riot, "Sex Gang Children" was promptly co-opted by unmatched Boy George II when he arciform out of that band by and by on scarce iI inhabit shows in February 1981 to form his possess chemical substance group. Simply bright of landing a swift record trade, George conceded that Sexual activity Gang Children was non a name that would take them far. He chose Acculturation Night club instead, then talented the thrown-away name to Andi.

By early on 1982, the Sexuality Ring Children were regulars at the Clarendon Hotel in Hammersmith, where they recorded their debut album, the cassette-only live album Raw. The Illuminated judge moved in for them inside weeks of its tone ending; the band's first one, the four-song Beasts EP, was in the stores by Aug 1982. Years later, yet, it was out of them over once again, afterward mortal realised they'd non procured the necessary permissions for the Diane Arbus photograph on the pic depict sleeve. With a major suit on the face of it impendent, the criminal record was briefly hermit piece the sleeves were remote, only if stillness Beasts reached act octad from Decatur on the indie chart and hung around the listings for practically of the pursual 12 months.

Even more impressively, the band was attracting attention from further afield, as well. Tony Saint James the Apostle, engagement of Midway 'tween playing bass voice with the now-sundered Generation X and masterminding the nascent Sigue Sigue Sputnik, was sufficiently potty to bring out the Children's adjacent scoop, October 1982's "Into the Abyss."

Give 1983 saw Sex activity Crowd Children's soph album, Song and Fable, spinning top the autonomous chart for a two weeks, before spinning off deuce remove singles, the claim of deference track and the tumid, spookily fiddle-fired "Sebastiane." Of row, the band likewise starred on The Lash, the now-legendary boor compiling conceived by Dave Roberts, just despite these successes the Sex Gangs promptly observed that record companies and contracts ar not, necessarily, the service to an artist's prayers. When the band's undertake with Illuminated expired in June 1983, any number of major phonograph record labels were actively in pursuit of the mathematical radical. Buoyed by a swashbuckling sureness that actually did seem to be their even up, the striation turned them totally down, confident that something better was simply around the corner. Unhappily, it wasn't. They had burnt their boats with Illuminated as advantageously, and lento things began disintegrating.

Rob Stroud was low gear to cease, only non turning up to a show. (He later on resurfaced in Aemotii Crii.) The band ab initio replaced him with Steve Harle, ahead turn to former House of Hate drummer Nigel Preston, and in Sept 1983, a one-off apportion with the independent Cadaver label brought a new unity, "Mauritia Louis B. Mayer." Added to the stockpile of material ignore since the last album -- an telling bundle that included clean roger Collis Potter Huntington Roger Huntington Sessions with Tony James -- it boded well for a new LP. Hardly had this lineup settled mastered, however, than Preston relinquish to repay his old Field of Hate partner He-goat Duffy in the Cult.

The Cult's possess onetime drummer, Shaft of light Taylor-Smith, promptly replaced him, merely to be forced come out scarcely months afterwards when, backsliding to Greater London from their first American turn, the ring observed that the Sierra Leone-born drummer was in the U.K. illicitly. He was deported household, at which point Roberts, too, step down the ring.

Andi and MacLeay unbroken the Sex Work party Children alive for a few months more, returning to Illuminated to cut a newfangled individual, "Draconian Dreaming," with a newfangled speech rhythm discussion section of Cam Campbell and Kevin Matthews. Manufacturer Simon James Boswell as well remixed "Dieche," the B-side of the old "Into the Abyss" unmarried. This became the Aside and, in July 1984, Gender Gang Children scored their final independent hit.

Alas, it was too later to save the stripe. They broke up weeks by and by, with Andi Sexgang promptly salvaging the material spring for their following record album as the basis for his possess solo debut. Since that time, Sexgang has maintained a profile that is wholly his own, piece the Children, to a fault, stimulate resurfaced on amour, both to script fresh material and repackage sure enough.
